ARGENTINA: In spite of the judges
On 11 June the federal judge with responsibility for electoral affairs, María Servini de Cubría, ruled that several articles of the recently approved law reforming the council of magistrates, the powerful judicial oversight body, are unconstitutional. The articles which prompted Servini de Cubría’s objections relate to the expansion of and election to the council of magistrates. The government had been hoping to hold primary elections to select the candidates for an expanded council on 11 August, and then hold final elections in October, alongside legislative elections.
