ARGENTINA: UCR clings on to Corrientes, despite FPV surge
The result was close, and made all the more agonising by the length of time it took to produce the final tally, but in the end Ricardo Colombi, the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR) governor of the northern province of Corrientes won re-election in the vote held there on 15 September. Despite the party’s longstanding success in the province, the UCR was pushed close by Carlos ‘Camau’ Espínola, the candidate of the ruling Frente para la Victoria (FPV), who came within five percentage points of victory. Given no Peronist party has won the province in the last 40 years, the FPV’s performance shows it retains a significant popular following going into October’s legislative elections.
