LATIN
AMERICAN REGIONAL REPORTS:
MEXICO & NAFTA - NOW AVAILABLE |
| This report looks
at what the split in the biggest party in congress, the Partido Revolucionario
Institucional, may mean. The split is probably the biggest in the party
since 1987, when old style politicians led by Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas
went off and ended up forming what became the Partido de la Revolución
Democrática. The problem for the PRI president, Roberto Madrazo,
is that the dissident, Elba Esther Gordillo, still commands over 100 of
the PRI's 222 members of the lower chamber, Latin America's biggest union,
and the support of President Vicente Fox. We also look at a range of other issues including: the government's plans for privatisation; the prospects for the oil industry; what is going on in the supreme court and whether the governor of the Banco de México will be reappointed. Our Nafta Report analyses the conclusions of the Carnegie Endowment on the first 10 years of Nafta. An annual subscription to Latin American Regional Report: Mexico & NAFTA (12 issues) is priced at US$225 (Discounted rates available to academics/NGOs).
