It was always going to be an uphill struggle for Evelyn Matthei, the presidential candidate for President Sebastián Piñera’s ruling centre-right Coalición por el Cambio, who is due to contest the second round run off against former president Michelle Bachelet (2006-2010) of the opposition leftist Nueva Mayoría on 15 December.
