PERU | Clashes in the VRAEM. After a protracted lull, since late August there have been several clashes between the government forces and Sendero Luminoso (SL) guerrillas in the Apurímac-Ene-Mantaro valley (VRAEM). According to official sources, the government forces have been gaining the upper hand, though an SL communiqué paints a different picture.
