Stalled progress in unravelling disappearances
The case of the disappearance of the 43 trainee students in Iguala, Guerrero state, and the botched official response, which has done so much to destroy faith in Mexico’s established political parties, remains unresolved. The head of the federal attorney general’s office (PGR), Arely Gómez, told a hostile federal senate on 8 October that a special unit within the PGR had been created “to direct, coordinate and supervise investigations in the search for disappeared people”. There was a surge of interest in an announcement by the PGR on 5 November that five bodies had been found in three shallow graves in the small town of Carrizalillo, Guerrero state, after residents in the area appealed to the authorities to search there for the bodies of the missing students, but there has been no confirmation yet of their identities.
