Panama: Varela deploys another elite task force
President Juan Carlos Varela last month announced the deployment of an elite task force (FTC-Águila) to towns in the provinces of Panamá, Panamá Este, Panamá Oeste and Colón in order to combat organised crime. The move points to ongoing government concerns regarding insecurity and crime, the chief public complaint, which President Varela attributes to the increase in drug production in neighbouring Colombia.
