Points of agreement: The wider security relationship
Mexico and the United States have had a good level of collaboration across a range of security issues. As we have noted, the advent of the Trump administration has not fundamentally changed that. Apart from sharp disagreements over NAFTA and how best to handle immigration, the authorities in both Washington and Mexico City share a common desire to protect their countries against cross-border terrorism, drug trafficking and organised crime. There seem to be no fundamental political or ideological disagreements in these areas. The danger, however, may reside in the fact that economic policy and immigration disagreements could spill over and affect security cooperation.
