The city of Rio de Janeiro has been particularly hard hit over the past few days. At a time of year when attention usually turns to Brazil’s most emblematic city for pre-Carnival festivities, Rio de Janeiro state authorities declared three days of official mourning last week for the victims of a rainstorm and of a fire in the dormitory of a football training centre.
