The US State Department has released some of the delayed Mérida Initiative funds but has also withheld some of the recently approved new funds for the Initiative, the latter until such time as it sees some improvements in specific human rights areas. The Mexican government has protested that this comes just after State had certified to the US Congress that Mexico had been making progress on the human rights front.
