MEXICO: Gordillo sidesteps purge within the PRI
The leadership of the opposition Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) last week conducted a long-awaited purge of its congressional bloc, split since PRI secretary-general Elba Esther Gordillo was ousted as leader and replaced by Emilio Chuayffet. Members of Gordillo's faction were removed from committee leadership positions; Gordillo has reacted by retreating to her old powerbase at the teachers' union.
