Weekly Report - 21 September 2023 (WR-23-38)

Over eight months after thousands of right-wing rioters stormed the seats of government in Brazil’s capital, the supreme court (STF) held its first trial sessions on 13-14 September to sentence the participants indicted for their actions on 8 January. Three rioters were convicted for serious crimes such as staging a coup d’état. In spite of some disagreement among the STF justices about the sentences, the court passed its judgments much more swiftly on the second day, having already hashed out legal debates in the first session.
