Was Beltrán Leyva a turning point?
The shooting dead of Arturo Beltrán Leyva on 16 December 2009 may be the turning point in President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa’s three year-long war on organised crime. He and his government urgently need clear evidence that they are winning. The best they can say is that the war has not moved on to another level since Beltrán Leyva’s killing, despite intelligence gathered by US sources and the threats from gangsters. The retaliatory murders, presumably by Beltrán Leyva’s gang, of the family of a marine killed in the attack on Beltrán Leyva, may have been the gang’s last spasm.
