Unrest perceived as threatening Bolivia’s collapse or even breakup
Bolivia is being seen by many as on the brink of collapse, or even of breaking up as a nation. Argentina's defence minister has described Bolivia as his country's biggest defence concern. US experts on Latin America have seen it either splitting into the highlands and the rest, or turning into a `narco state'. To make matters worse, open discussion of these prospects is only exacerbating Bolivians fears that outsiders - chiefly Chile and the US - are actually plotting to break it up.
