Mercosur defence chiefs disagree with US on obsolescence of conventional forces
The defence ministers of Mercosur have announced that they will defend the maintenance of conventional armed forces, explicitly rejecting what they describe as US pressure to impose a 'national guard' model. They have also agreed that confronting terrorism is primarily a matter for the police, not the military. One thing they did not do when they met in Buenos Aires in mid September was fulfil their host's prediction that they would create a permanent secretariat within Mercosur for military affairs.
