The case of the disappearing gigafactory
The promise and peril surrounding parts of the Latin American automobile industry is brought into sharp focus by the story of Tesla’s gigafactory in Santa Catarina, a municipality west of Monterrey in the Mexican state of Nuevo León. In March 2023 Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla and the world’s wealthiest individual, announced that his company would build a giant factory there, to produce Tesla EVs for export back to the United States.
