Agribusiness in Latin America and the Caribbean
The Shanghai perspective
The China International Import Expo Fair was held in Shanghai in November 2018. The event was a milestone on various levels. It provided an opportunity for a range of international exporters to gain access to the gigantic Chinese market (the second-largest in the world); it attracted around 3,000 companies from 130 countries. At a time of pronounced trade tensions between China and the US, it could also be seen as a statement by the Beijing government of its commitment to balanced trade. Chinese diplomats pro-actively promoted the Fair. For example, Tian Qi, China’s ambassador to Jamaica, said his country was seeking to import US$10tn worth of goods and services from Latin America and the Caribbean over the next five years.
