Agribusiness in Latin America and the Caribbean
Can there be an agro-industrial revolution?
The IDB argues that an agro-industrial revolution could help the Latin American economies advance towards more sustainable growth. In a briefing for heads of state attending the Summit of the Americas in Lima in mid-2018, the IDB said that LAC is a major net exporter of food, accounting for 16% of world food and agricultural exports and 4% of imports. The world is beginning to run out of cultivated land, but of the 446m hectares of land still potentially suitable for sustainable expansion, over a quarter (28%) is located in Latin America. LAC was also the only region in the world to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of halving malnutrition between 1990 and 2015.
