BRAZIL: Spying scandal hits Bolsonaro allies

The federal police (PF) has launched a new series of investigations, dubbed Operation ‘Vigilância Aproximada’, targeting a network within Brazil’s national intelligence agency (Abin) that allegedly carried out illegal surveillance activities during the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023). The PF searched the properties of former Abin director Alexandre Ramagem on 25 January and of Bolsonaro’s second son, Carlos Bolsonaro, on 29 January. The scandal also resulted in the dismissal of Abin’s deputy director on 30 January.
