BRAZIL: Brumadinho marks anniversary of mining disaster

Demonstrators took to the streets in Brumadinho, a municipality in Minas Gerais state which suffered a high-profile environmental disaster on 25 January 2019 caused by a burst tailings dam owned by Brazilian mining giant Vale. Among the demonstrators commemorating the fifth anniversary of the tragedy was the association of the Brumadinho victims’ families (Avabrum), which has long called for the mining firm to be held accountable with tougher punishments.
