MEXICO: New theory in Colosio murder case

Mexico’s federal attorney general’s office (FGR) has announced a new lead in the investigation into the murder of Luis Donaldo Colosio, a presidential candidate who was assassinated almost three decades ago. The FGR’s new allegations – which have been dismissed by the judge overseeing the case – implicate the state in Colosio’s murder, suggesting foul play on the part of the now-opposition Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), for whom the reformist candidate was running. Some have noted the timing of the reopening of the case, just as Mexico embarks on a bumper electoral year, suggesting political motives.
