GUATEMALA: A long-awaited meeting

Guatemala’s new president Bernardo Arévalo has finally held a face-to-face meeting with the discredited attorney general, María Consuelo Porras. The encounter, which the president said was necessary to establish “inter-institutional coordination”, was hotly anticipated. Porras had spearheaded efforts last year to derail his landslide election victory, won on the back of the pledge to take on the ‘pacto de corruptos’ with which she is aligned. The meeting, however, lasted barely 15 minutes before Porras excused herself on dubious grounds, having previously refused to comply with information requests from the president’s office. Porras’ continuance in her post, which runs until mid-2026, remains a major obstacle to the new president in his efforts to push through his anti-corruption agenda.
