Venezuela’s top court outlaws Machado’s presidential bid

Venezuela’s supreme court (TSJ) upheld a ban this week on María Corina Machado competing in the presidential elections for the opposition coalition Plataforma Unitaria Democrática (PUD), barring her from holding public office until 2036. President Nicolás Maduro claimed that the ruling was in no way inconsistent with the Barbados agreement signed between the government and the PUD last October that paved the way for the US easing sanctions on Venezuela and that, in fact, it was the opposition that was “partially non-complying” with the accord by objecting to the TSJ’s verdict. The US Department of State interpreted it rather differently. It said that sanctions would be fully reinstated unless Machado were allowed to compete.
