PANAMA: Martinelli to depart electoral race, and country

The frontrunner ahead of Panama’s presidential elections in May 2024, former president Ricardo Martinelli (Cambio Democrático, 2009-2014), has dramatically bowed out of the race. On 8 February, following the upholding by the supreme court (CSJ) of a money-laundering conviction against the former president, who was planning to seek re-election for his new political outfit, Realizando Metas (RM), Martinelli requested political asylum in Nicaragua, which the government led by President Daniel Ortega has duly granted. His apparent exit from the presidential race leaves it wide open.
