ARGENTINA: Milei suffers serious setback

Argentina’s President Javier Milei lashed out at congressional deputies and provincial governors for “betraying voters” this week after his omnibus bill of reforms was roundly rejected. The amount of legislators expressing caveats while approving the omnibus bill in the lower chamber of congress at a ‘general’ level on 2 February did not augur well for the article-by-article ‘particular’ vote four days later. And so it proved. After several articles were shot down, Milei’s minority far-right La Libertad Avanza (LLA) withdrew the bill and returned it to committee. There might have been a degree of playing to the gallery in Milei’s vitriolic outburst on social media after the defeat but unless he shows greater flexibility, rather than expecting to steamroller his agenda through congress, a similar fate could await future bills.
