VENEZUELA: UN human rights staff expelled

Venezuela’s government is waging an intensifying crackdown on its opponents in the run-up to the presidential election that is due to be held at some stage this year. With international condemnation mounting over the arrest of the director of one of the country’s leading NGOs, President Nicolás Maduro’s government has shrugged at the outrage. There was no clearer indication of that insouciance than the announcement on 15 February that the Venezuelan branch of the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) was being closed down, with its staff told to leave the country within 72 hours.
