ECUADOR: Russia ramps up pressure over US arms deal

Ecuador has in recent weeks been reluctantly dragged into debates over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, amid intense Russian backlash to a proposed arms deal with the US. Whilst President Daniel Noboa’s government insists that the deal would only see Ecuador send “scrap” Russian-made military hardware to the US in return for new equipment, Moscow argues that the deal creates a back-door route for the transfer of weapons to Ukraine. Ecuador now seems to be backing out of the plan after Russia temporarily suspended Ecuadorean banana imports.
