BRAZIL: An unprecedented escape from a federal prison

Only two weeks into his tenure as Brazil’s justice minister, Ricardo Lewandowski has been under pressure to address serious concerns over the security of the federal prison system. On 14 February two convicts escaped from the federal penitentiary of Mossoró, a municipality in the north-eastern state of Rio Grande do Norte. Lewandowski personally travelled to Mossoró on 18 February to oversee the efforts to bolster security in the prison and to capture the fugitives.
