Stroessner-era torturer given heavy sentence

A Paraguayan court handed down the maximum prison sentence of 30 years on 20 February to a former police interrogator accused of torture under the dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner (1954-1989). The victims who brought the case in 2011 celebrated the conviction of Eusebio Torres, although human rights activists bemoaned the length of time it had taken to obtain justice and the lack of progress against other offenders. Due to his frail state of health and advanced age, Torres, 88, will probably only serve a short period of his sentence and this will be under house arrest.
