MEXICO: Ayotzinapa killing fans tensions

The police killing of a student from the Ayotzinapa rural teacher training college in Mexico’s Guerrero state has sparked a fierce backlash, with protests concentrated in state capital Chilpancingo. The killing comes at a sensitive juncture. Tensions have flared in the past week over the government’s handling of the investigation into the disappearance of 43 students from the same college in 2014. The government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will have to tread carefully to ensure the incident does not further fuel these tensions and ignite widespread discontent. However, López Obrador’s comments so far appear to have inflamed the issue.
