MEXICO: Women’s marches take place with electoral backdrop
International Women’s Day on 8 March once again saw hundreds of thousands of protesters take to the streets across Mexico in order to demand greater rights and security for women. Many of the principal demands remain unchanged from protests in previous years – with the reduction of femicide and gender violence remaining front and centre. However, this year’s marches were also marked by the tentative hope that the almost certain election of Mexico’s first female president in June and ensuing change of government in October, will usher in progress for the women’s rights movement.
