MEXICO: Journalist kidnapping causes alarm

The kidnapping of Jaime Barrera Rodríguez, a prominent journalist in the western state of Jalisco, on 11 March sparked an outpouring of concern and calls for the authorities to act. Barrera was found and returned safely to his family in the early hours of 13 March, reportedly rescued in a national guard (GN) operation in the Magdalena region of the state. But the incident was yet another reminder of the dangers confronting journalists working in Mexico.
