COLOMBIA: New attorney general inherits incendiary investigations

After weeks of gridlock that at one point sparked an eruption of violent protest in Bogotá and expressions of international concern, Colombia’s supreme court has finally reached a consensus on the country’s next attorney general. Luz Adriana Camargo will be the country’s top prosecutor until 2028, inheriting a number of politically sensitive investigations – not least the one examining alleged illegal financing in President Gustavo Petro’s 2022 election campaign. That investigation will remain a source of tension between the government and the attorney general’s office, although relations can hardly be worse than they were under Camargo’s predecessor, Francisco Barbosa (2020-2024).
