VENEZUELA: Pressure mounts on Machado to step aside

As was no doubt the intention of Venezuela’s government, the opposition is showing signs of fracturing in the run-up to the 25 March deadline set by the national electoral council (CNE) for the registration of presidential candidates. The chosen candidate for the opposition coalition Plataforma Unitaria Democrática (PUD), María Corina Machado, insists that she will not stand aside despite being controversially disqualified. Possibly as a result, members of Machado’s campaign team have been targeted with arrest. She is now under growing pressure from others in the PUD to stand down and let an eligible candidate represent the opposition in the July election.
