URUGUAY: Campaign ignites after frontrunner defamed

Uruguay’s presidential election campaign was embroiled in scandal this week after a member of the ruling centre-right Partido Nacional (PN, Blancos), Romina Celeste Papasso, admitted to fabricating an incident to damage the reputation of Yamandú Orsi, the early frontrunner for the main left-wing Frente Amplio (FA) coalition, ahead of primary elections next month. Orsi alleged that the incident was part of “a political operation” against his candidacy, without pointing the finger at any particular party. President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou unreservedly condemned the false accusation against Orsi but cautioned against inferring that there was any orchestrated political plot.
