BOLIVIA: Arce tries to counter Morales with MAS power grab

Bolivia’s President Luis Arce and former president Evo Morales (2006-2019) are increasingly operating in parallel realities. The divisions within the ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) between Arce’s ‘Arcistas’ and Morales’ ‘Evistas’ grew wider still on 5 May, when a party congress organised by the Arcista faction removed Morales as party leader, replacing him with Arce loyalist Grover García. Morales, whose faction refused to recognise the legitimacy of the congress, has said that he will mount a legal challenge to be reinstalled as MAS leader.
