BRAZIL: The multifaceted crisis in the flood-stricken south

Brazil’s federal government has ramped up its efforts to address the severe floods which have been devastating the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul in recent weeks. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva visited the state again on 15 May and announced more financial support for the victims who have lost their homes to the floods. However, aside from housing, the displaced peoples also face other problems, such as a rise in crime and disease, which authorities are trying to tackle.
