MEXICO: Opposition remains divided

Recent attempts to unite Mexicos opposition appear to have backfired. The efforts centre on calls for Jorge Álvarez Máynez, the presidential candidate for the leftist opposition Movimiento Ciudadano (MC), to withdraw in a bid to boost the candidacy of second-placed Xóchitl Gálvez, running for the main opposition coalition Fuerza y Corazón por Mexico. While designed to weaken the position of frontrunner Claudia Sheinbaum of the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), the proposals have revealed schisms between and within opposition parties just over two weeks until elections on 2 June.
