GUATEMALA: Arévalo hosts key migration ministerial meeting

Guatemala recently hosted diplomats and top officials from 21 countries, including US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, as part of a ministerial meeting of the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection, a shared implementation plan promoted by the US to advance a regional response to migration management across the Western Hemisphere. The summit, which produced renewed pledges to address migration, follows other efforts by Guatemala’s new government led by anti-corruption reformer President Bernardo Arévalo to tackle migration on a regional basis. This, in turn, reflects efforts to shore up ties with Washington by Arévalo, who in March met President Joe Biden [WR-24-12].
