COLOMBIA: Petro slams state over Farc accord as Márquez re-emerges

It was confirmed this week that the reports of the death of Luciano Marín Arango (‘Iván Márquez’), the head of the Segunda Marquetalia group of dissident guerrillas in Colombia, were greatly exaggerated. Márquez’s death was reported in July 2022 in a clash between the Segunda Marquetalia, a splinter group from the demobilised Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc), and another illegal armed group in the Venezuelan border state of Apure. Márquez has now appeared in a video recording for the first time since then. No sooner had the video appeared than President Gustavo Petro issued a scathing indictment of the Colombian state’s implementation of the peace accord with the Farc in 2016 which he said he intended to denounce before the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
