ARGENTINA: Milei sparks diplomatic crisis

Some kind of diplomatic fallout always looked likely when Argentina’s President Javier Milei decided to attend an event organised by the far-right Spanish opposition party Vox in Madrid ahead of elections for the European Parliament on 19 May, without following protocol and meeting any member of the Spanish government during his visit. That Milei used his speech not just to rail against socialism but also to make a thinly veiled allusion to Spain’s prime minister Pedro Sánchez and his “corrupt” wife Begoña Gómez ensured a reaction from the Spanish government. What Milei might not have calculated on was the strength of that reaction.
