COSTA RICA: Corruption at the Caja?

Compared to the majority of Latin American countries, corruption in Costa Rica is minimal. Any scandals that do reach the public, therefore, tend to prompt some thorough soul-searching, not least when the scandal centres on a cherished public institution. On 19 May a team of judges, public prosecutors, police and computer technicians swooped on the offices of the Corporación Fischel, a pharmaceutical firm, following an earlier raid on the offices of Costa Rica's social security organisation (the Caja Costariccense de Seguridad Social), triggered by an investigation by the Costa Rican daily La Nación into the activities of Eliseo Vargas, former head of the Caja.
