In brief: Unemployment down in Brazil

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the unemployment figures for the rolling quarter of March-May 2024, which showed a jobless rate of 7.1%, corresponding to 7.8m unemployed people. This is down from the 7.8% rate registered for the December 2023-February 2024 rolling quarter and from the 8.3% unemployment in March-May 2023. In a press release, the Ibge stated that the latest figure is the lowest registered for the March-May quarter since 2014. Compared to the December-February quarter, the job category which registered the highest rise in employed people was public administration, defence, social security, education, healthcare, and social services (+4.4% or 776,000 more people).
