Jacinto Peynado dies at 63

Former vice-president of the Dominican Republic Jacinto Peynado died in Miami on 8 August after a long battle with colon cancer. He was 63 years old. Peynado served under former president and political grandee Joaquí­n Balaguer between 1994 and 1996 and was seen by many as the man to revive the fortunes of Balaguer's once-powerful Partido Reformista Social Cristiano (PRSC). The PRSC performed abysmally in the presidential elections on 16 May this year, garnering a mere 8% of the vote.
