DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Fernández shocked by surge in violent crime

An upsurge in violent crime has rocked the new government of President Leonel Fernández. More than 20 people died in two incidents in September. One, which claimed seven lives in the northern locality of Navarrete, was the result of a turf war between drug traffickers. The other took place in Azúa, 120 kilometres southwest of Santo Domingo: six people were killed after a police raid on a suspected gang of criminals. The victims were four of the suspects, a passerby and a radio journalist who had been covering the events only to be tracked down and shot by relatives of the first four later.
