EL SALVADOR: FMLN goes its own way

When President Tony Saca assumed power in June he promised to try and overcome the polarisation that has traditionally characterised politics in El Salvador by involving the leftwing opposition Frente Farabundo Martí­ para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) in decision-making. Saca embodied the new El Salvador. Dynamic and forward looking, he was seen as providing a break with the conflicts of the past.
