COSTA RICA: Arias's candidacy triggers exodus

On 14 January Nobel Peace prize winner and former president Oscar Arias (1986-1990) officially registered as the candidate for the opposition Partido Liberación Nacional for the 2006 presidential elections. Not everyone, however, greeted this announcement with enthusiasm; Arias's declaration was accompanied by the resignation of several of the party's most prominent members, who used the occasion of their leaving to heap criticism on the PLN's presidential candidate.
