DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Fernández grapples with challenges

The government of President Leonel Fernández set itself two major challenges when it came into power on 16 August 2004. The first was to reverse the fall of the peso and bring back the economic growth of the early 1990s; the other was to resolve the longstanding electricity crisis in the Dominican Republic. Both goals seemed ambitious but just five months later the government has unexpectedly met with a reasonable degree of success.
