Strong showing for centrists and conservatives in Brazil elections

The first round of Brazil’s municipal elections on 6 October produced strong performances from big tent parties such as the Partido Social Democrático (PSD) and the Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (MDB), as well as for the right-wing party of former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023), the Partido Liberal (PL). The ruling left-wing Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won more mayorships compared with 2020, but in Brazil’s state capitals centrist and conservative candidates still performed better.
