*Brazil’s finance ministry has announced that it has asked the telecoms regulator (Anatel) to block 2,040 betting websites in line with new regulations requiring betting platforms to pay a R$30m (US$5.3m) licence fee in order to continue operating past 1 January. Platforms will also need to comply with new regulations to tackle fraud, money laundering, and abusive advertising, in line with new rules established by the finance ministry earlier this year. The finance ministry said in a statement that 96 companies will be permitted to continue operating as they have complied with these rules. Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said that “those [platforms] which have not been regularised, which are not in a process of regularisation, will be taken off air”.
